THE OUTDOOR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AT ST. NICHOLAS PRIMARY SCHOOL

During the academic year 2007/8 outdoor environment at St. Nicholas underwent a great deal of change. The changes are continuing in the 2008/2009 academic year

Completed projects include:

  • The Fitness adventure trail is now up and running!
  • Each class now has their own garden plot where they can grow anything they want!
  • The willow tunnel is now planted and awaiting the summer sun!

Projects still under construction include:

  • The wooland area has been planted. We now need to nurture it and watch it grow.
  • The shrubbed area in the corner of the field is quickly becoming established. But we will continue to plant in the summer of 2009
  • The nature area at the top of the field is gathering momentum. The pond has now been completed! The next step is to position the animal houses and plant things that will encourage the animals to set up home.

The next stage

  • To build a sensory garden.
  • To Further develop the outdoor classroom.
  • To set up a picnic area.
  • To develop welcome gardens in the front of the school.

Please study the photographs to evaluate our progress to date:

The climbing frame is awsome.  My favourite bit is the bars at end becuse you can do a Millon tricks on them.  The whole climbing frame is amazing the rope logs are cool and the the rest

By Thomas Harvey - Year 5

It took a week till the fitness trail was done. When it was done everyone was happy and everyone loves it. A timetable that will tell you whose turn it is.

The climbing frame has wooden steps, a bridge to get over, 3 bars; rope cross. There is a rope with two ropes beside it. Then finally there is a rope underneath you and then you go on the twisting wooden blocks a rope is holding the wooden blocks. I think the best part is the 3 bars to swing on!

Look it's Wurzel Gummage guarding Class 2's magnificent garden

What an instant hit this has been with all classes.  The green fingured children have worked extremely hard at planting, growing and maintaining their gardens.

We have even been selling radishes to the parents!

Read the children's reports to discover their role in the project.

Each class now has an alotement where we have been planting and growing things like crazy, we've even got to taste some things too. In class 1 & 2 they built scarecrows and put shiny thing around there gardens to keep away the birds. Class 3 haven't started there yet as they have been so busy lately. But class 4s looks wicked we've got beans, cucumber, lettuce, radish which we got to try and much more.

Class 3 have not started on there garden yet but we are goiung to plant herbs and fruit. We thought fruit would be good because not alot of children know where the fruit comes fromand maybe to engorage them to eat more fruit that they would never try.

ST. NICHOLAS WILLOW TRAIL CREATED BY THE CHILDREN

On the 3rd of November, a woman called Claire came into the school and did Willlow Weaving with us. She taught us how to make the base of a Willow Star using the 'butt' end (lol) and weaving them together to make a perfect (more or less) pentagon in the middle. The aim on the acctual weaving was to put the thinnest end in the elastic you use to tie the frame together, then wrap it around THREE TIMES, then make a sort of figure of eight, by putting it through the middle, then half wrapping it, and putting it through again e.c.t. I made one and a half stars in total. BYE!

By Luke Williams - Year 6

ON THE THIRD OF DECEMBER WE  HAD TWO PRO PEOPLE IN TO HELP US DO IT AND ARE WILLOW TUNNEL AND WE DONE DIFFRENT KINDS OF DECORATIONS IT WAS AMAZING THANKS ALL THE TEACHERS.

By Jay 'S' Jones- Year 6

A group of people went out to make a willow tunnel first we put in the thick bits of willow in and then we weaved in and out the thin peices to make a propper tunnel which was cool. Then we went back to class and we made stars as Christmas Decorations to sell at the school disco and I had a fab day. Thank you Mrs Taylor-Gibbs for organising the day.
