ST. NIC ECO-WARRIORS

During the last two years the hard working staff (Mrs Wiltshire, Mrs Taylor-Gibbs, Mrs Cuddihy and Mr. Lewis) have embarked on an Eco Adventure, enrolling our school in the Eco-Schools Initiative.
There are two children from each year group that work together to make the Eco team. The team are involved in several projects both in and out of school. As part of setting up the Eco standard in the School the team worked with children throughout the school to come up with our St Nicholas Eco Code.

During the Autumn term 2008/2009 the Eco Team has been involved in a project where they were asked to make a giant christmas decoration, using re-cycled materials. The whole school was involved in collecting plastic pop bottles, carrier bags, plastic wrappers and foil. The Eco-Team worked really hard to turn the contents of our collection into a giant snowflake. The finished article went on dispaly in the Mayors Parlour, where visitors made enthusiastic comments about the display!
The work undertaken by the Eco Team has supported the OUTSTANDING DEVELOPMENTS made in the outdoor environment over the last year.

Team work is at the core of the Eco Committee
A great deal of progress has been made in a short space of time and securing the services of Mr. Lewis, our extremely green fingured caretaker, has been a tremendous coup.
Last Year Mrs Wiltshire, Mrs Taylor-Gibbs, Mrs. Cuddihy and Mr Lewis took the Eco Team to Garden at the National Botanocal Gardens in Carmarthen. There they grew their own Vegetables and had a wonderful experience. The eco team continue to pass on the skills they learned in the gardens and help the rest of the school to become more Eco-Aware!

Meet the St. Nicholas Eco-Warriors at the National Botanic Gardens in Carmarthen - here to save a planet near you! |
Where have all the flowers gone?
If you’re wondering where the abundance of plants and flowers growing in class 1 and 2 over the easter holidays last year disappeared…wonder no more! After much preparation and lots of hard work St Nicholas Eco-committee along with members of the Gardening club headed off to the National Botanical Gardens of
Before the Easter holidays 2008 the team headed up by Mrs Wiltshire, went down to class one for a mass planting session. With the help of Mrs Taylor-Gibbs, Mrs Cuddihy and Mr Lewis the children planted hundreds of seeds and left them to grow in the sun on every windowsill available in the school!
Over the first few weeks of the Summer term the children worked hard to make a St Nicholas scarecrow to protect their crops. As well as a giant weaved sunflower as a fantastic backdrop for their vegetable patch.
The team headed off to the National botanical gardens to plant their seedlings. Once in their head to toe wetsuits they battled through the rain and wind to plant sweet corn, runner beans, tomatoes, sunflowers, leaf beet, cabbage, calendula, parsley, onions, leeks, carrots, beetroot and plenty more! Their hard work paid off though and the garden looked fantastic when they had finished. A stunning example of what determination and team work can do in St Nicholas!
Over the summer 2008 the wonderful gardeners and staff at the National Botanical gardens will look after the St Nicholas Patch and help the plants to reach their full potential. In September the St Nicholas team returned to harvest their crops and give thanks at a special harvest festival. They brought back their crops to share with the rest of the school, and the teachers worked as a team to make a very special ST NICHOLAS VEGETABLE SOUP!
Though you can no longer go and take a look for yourselves. The St Nicholas team set up thier patch inside the double walled garden. There are literally hundreds of photos avaliable for you to look at in school.
Take a look at our AMAZING Garden!

Eco-committee & Gardening Club On the 18th June the Eco-committee and the Gardening club went to the Botanical gardens of Wales. My favourite part of the day was the Dome. by Ieuan Ridout
The weather there was horrendous so we had to put on these water-proof trousers when we got there.
I was in Mr. Lewis’ group and we planted some vegetables 1st. Then we went to the dome and went around and saw all the tropical plants and lost Mrs. Taylor Gibbs & her group, we looked for them in the dome for an hour but they had already gone to the play area.
There were lots of unusual plants, especially the one that squirted water on you!!! I also really liked the pond because there was a really cool bridge that you walked over and when you looked down from the bridge you could see some turtles in the water.
I really enjoyed the day at the Botanical Gardens and I feel that I learnt alot about our environment and how we can try and change the damage that we are doing to our planet.

ECO-WEEK: WALK TO SCHOOL DAY - MAY 19TH
As part of gaining our Blue Flag Eco-School status, we decided to organise, in response to a national initiative, a Walk to School Day. Our aims were to raise awareness of traffic pollution and to encourage as many children as possible to walk to school.
