THE ART CURRICULUM AT ST. NICHOLAS

A Class 1 project using the outdoor

 environmnet as a stimulus

At St. Nicholas Church in Wales Primary School we believe that it important that Art should be seen as both an integral part of the whole curriculum and a subject in its own right.

The skills and knowledge acquired from Art should enhance the enjoyment and learning of the enitre curriculum and these must be used as a stimulus for Art lessons.

When planning activities, great attention needs to be given to the STIMULUS provided for the children and the PROCESS, which leads them to the finished product.

During the process, the children must be encouraged to experiment and constantly evaluate their work. They should be given time to make mistakes and learn from them.

They will be encouraged to discuss their ideas with their teacher and their peers

We hope to
* Motivate and maintain pupil's creative activity;
* Use a range of strategies, including demonstration of techniques, teacher intervention and guidance and whole class evaluation in discussion;
* Include the preparation of good oral and written unit briefs which include criteria for assessment;
* Sequence activities to ensure progression in understanding and in the acquisition of skills.

The activities of understanding, making and investigating should be interwoven so that the learning from each serves to reinforce the learning in others.

We aim to achieve good standards in teaching and learning by encouraging pupils' to:

* Develop their knowledge and understanding of artists, craft workers and

   designers working in a range of media and from a variety of periods, cultures

   and contexts, including local and Welsh examples;
* Respond practically and imaginatively to the methods and ideas of others;
* Demonstrate an understanding of the visual language of line, tone, colour,

  pattern, texture, shape and form and apply it effectively in their own work;
* Select, control and experiment with a range of materials, processes and

   techniques in two and three dimensions and on a variety of scales;
* Record images effectively from direct observation and visualise ideas

   expressively from memory, feelings and imagination, using a variety of

   resources;
* Allow children to work individually, in groups or as a whole class;
* Review and modify their work where appropriate.
